Woodgrained Mantelpiece

Rio del Mar, California

Like marbling, woodgraining -- the simulation of a natural material with paint -- is a very ancient craft, examples of which date back to ancient Egypt.

Woodgraining has a number of uses.  In this instance, I used the technique to give a plain pine mantelpiece the rich appearance of mahogany.
